Homemade Chocolate Milk Mix. Mmmmmm.

Yum yum. Chocolate milk is a delicious part of childhood. Not something you should drink everyday, of course, but a treat now and then? You bet. I haven’t purchased the store stuff, Hershey’s, Ovaltine, etc for so long I have no idea what they put in it. Do you? But we can guess it isn’t all wholesome and natural. So . . . I searched and found a most delicious and CRAZY simple recipe for a make-at-home version. DEE-licious. For real. So, this time, reach for these simple pantry items and serve. Before you turn around, they’ll be slurping up the bottom of the glass.

The Recipe, adapted from Heavenly Homemakers

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup water

1/2  cup cocoa

1 pinch of sea salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

Bring the first four ingredients to a boil over medium-high heat for one minute. Cool slightly and add the vanilla. Store in the refriderator for, well, I don’t know how long; ours is already gone. :) Add to milk one tablespoon at a time to taste.

According to my offspring, raised on the crappy store-bought stuff, this is “The best ever.” Next time I’ll try it with maple syrup, perhaps. Although, as much as I love to substitute natural for processed, the real maple syrup kick around here is really adding up. I mean, it’s about $1.oo per 1/4 cup. Yikes. :)

My farm to table plans are done!

backyard gardening for kids

Oh, the joy of a garden. I have always been fascinated by backyard gardens. Growing up, my third grade teacher, Mr. Boen and his wife ran a local vegetable farm, Bluebird Gardens, which sold it’s produce at a little road-side stand in the warm Minnesota summers. We took a field trip to their farm that fall;…

week, um, what week is it? I haven’t blogged in a bit. Haven’t posted on my FB page either. You may be wondering “Did she give up?”  “Was it just too hard?” No no, that’s not it at all. I am so into this I can’t seem to stop. Didn’t expect that, did you? I’ve…

The finish line is in sight. Have we arrived? Not sure.

Cooking from scratch, pizza

Holy cow! Tomorrow . . . tomorrow . . . is the finish line. As of tomorrow, I will have fed my family “from scratch” for thirty days. I am not sure if I believed, when I started, that I’d get here. I think I at least HOPED I would. On week one I found…

How would you like to have only one can of trash per week?

Here we go, with Insight Number Two: One of the most surprising things to me (once I did realize it, its not really all that “surprising) is how much less trash we’ve been producing. My twelve year old son is the main “trash collector” of the household. Takes it out every week. He told me…

Whoa. As I sit down to type I realize that it is planning time for the last week of my “Month from Scratch” experiment. Crazy! I’ve barely posted and I am sorry about that. I will be catching you up on my experience and sharing a lot of recipes over the next few weeks. I…

A new week, a new start. Much better.

homemade granola

Wow, week one was chaos. See, I have known for months that sometime in the New Year we would take on this project, but I didn’t quite know when. A week ago Sunday I just up and decided “Let’s start on Monday!” This is kind of how I roll, but as it turns out, the…

Why “From Scratch”? What is “From Scratch” anyway?

It’s a little funny to me, how vague this idiom is: From Scratch. If you attempt to look up what exactly it means, you come up with a variety of answers. One online dictionary defines it as:   from scratch- From the very beginning.  Another site defines  ’made from scratch’ as ‘made from basic ingredients’. Well, what exactly are  “basic ingredients”?…

It’s working. My twelve year old in the kitchen.

I have always believed that kids are capable of so much more than our culture gives them credit for. When my kids were small we moved the cereal and bowls to a low shelf so they could help themselves. When they were as young as three, we taught them to keep their fingers out of…

Day Two. Phew. Cooking from scratch is insane.

Okay, there, I said it. There is a reason I decided to blog about this. A reason I told everyone I know about this project. Because, if I hadn’t, I so would have called Pizza Hut last night. I didn’t do a darn thing besides cook. Nothing. To be fair, yesterday and today were extra…
